Microneedling FAQ

Dermapen® Microneedling employs the traditional Chinese technique for acupuncture only that here; the targeted result is to improve the skin appearance.

A Dermapen® has 12 needles on the very tip and these 12 needles are the ones that are used to puncture the top layer of the skin as the device glides over the area being treated. The pen will be positioned vertically over the skin and when it is turned on, a motor that is found inside the pen will start making the needles move rapidly back and forth on the skin surface, which creates the punctures. When a person hurts themselves, the skin will generally initiate skin repair by stimulating growth factors that will, in turn, lead to the generation of collagen and elastin. Therefore, when the punctures are made using the Dermapen, the skin will treat the punctures as wounds and therefore initiate healing. This means that micro-needling tend to trick the skin to produce collagen and elastin to promote ‘healing’ and the effect will be rejuvenated skin.

Dermapen® microneedling is used mostly for face wrinkles, scars, and facial lines. When one is injured and the skin forms a scar, the body treats it as repaired. Therefore having the punctures created in the scar tissue will cause the skin to initiate healing and, therefore, the damaged skin will tend to get eliminated and replaced with new skin. For wrinkles and face lines, the produced collagen and elastin will cause the skin to thicken and also tighten leaving the skin looking youthful.

Generally, Dermapen® has been effective and quite advantageous over other skin treatment procedures. This has seen to it that its popularity keeps growing by the day.

How does microneedling work?

The device slides along the skin and penetrates upper layers of the skin to a depth of up to 2mm to create tiny needle wounds. This signals the body to respond by producing collagen and elastin fibers. As a result, the skin becomes fuller, thus reducing the appearance of scars, lines, and wrinkles.

What Will I Look Like After the Treatment?

Most people will notice redness and mild swelling similar to slight sunburn for 24-48 hours and there may be slight pinpoint bleeding and/or bruising. Skin will be noticeably smoother and more radiant within a week or two. Full results will take a few months to appear.

What Does the Procedure Involve?

It begins with cleaning and numbing the skin using a collagen-stimulating product, Vitamin C serum, or a skin lightener. A small pen with 12 tiny needles is used to create tiny wounds in the skin. The speed and adjustability of the needles allows for more effective piercing and absorption of skin products. Vitamin-C serum or Hyaluronic acid is used after the procedure to hydrate, heal and protect the skin.

What is the DownTime After Microneedling?

Inflammation of the skin is very temporary and reduces greatly within a few hours. It may remain slightly pink for up to 48 hours after treatment. Using hyaluronic acid after the procedure can help reduce inflammation, and an IMAGE Skincare sunscreen can be used to protect the skin. Makeup use should be limited to mineral makeup.

How do I take care of my skin after the treatment?

  • Patients tolerate the procedure easily. However, side effects such as dryness, scaling, redness, or swelling may last for a few days (or longer).

  • It is recommended that patients protect their skin from the sun after the procedure.

  • It is recommended that the patient clean his/her face with a gentle cleanser every night. This should be repeated in the morning and products such as makeup and lotions can be used regularly.

  • Skin rejuvenation will be visible as soon as two weeks after the procedure or as much as six to eight months after.
